(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURSx, Aug. 13. At a meeting of the school committee Mr F. A. Dunstall presided and others present were Messrs .J. B. Scarle, Ji. iunniclifie, R. A. Jones, R. 11. Davis (secretary) and R. W. Finlay (headmaster). The headmaster reported that the roll was 106 and the average attenuation had been b4.G per cent. Owing to the abnormal dry weather conditions the school’s concrete tank water supply had been drained and the electric pump had to be connected with the well in Mr Tolmie’s yard to augment the school supply and ease the main on tne tank systems. 'Lire calf and agricultural club entries would close just prior to the holidays and it was considered advisable to obtain more interest in these competitions by appealing to parents to assist the children s efforts. The grounds now present a pleasing appearance. Fences in need of repairs are to be inspected and the Education Hoard asked to attend to the work when doing the repair work at the school. The boy’s soccer team continue to do well in the Manawatu Association and several boys may get into the representative team, which goes to Napier shortly. It was decided to have the school playing area grazed during the vacation. Mr Scarle was appointed manager pi the boys who are to play in Palmerston North.

The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs A. Currie. Miss lv. Brewer was welcomed as a member. The resignation of Mrs Holdcroft. who has left the district, was accepted with regret. Children from the local school entertained members, as follow: Recitation/Cecil Tunnicliffe; percussion band, the smaller boys and girls; verse speaking, infant class; solo, Shirley Duthie;'song, Colin Blows. Competitions resulted: Flower,, Mrs Woodroofe 1, Mrs Currie 2 ; adults competition for handworked tray cloth, Mrs Bleakley 1, Mrs R. Harper 2, Mrs Mullins 3; junior class, an article in cross-stieth, Miss J£. Brewer 1, Miss Hobson 2, Miss Mclsaac 3. Mrs Astwood and Miss Shaw acted as judges. Another competition was won by Mrs \V. Brewer. The hostesses for next month are Mesdamcs Bleakley, Brewer, Flowers, Wimamson, Wilkin and Miss M. Wilkin. The competitions will be: Adults, pretty cake plate and a night gown (the latter entries to be donated to the refugees’ fund); juniors, machine-made print apron). Hostesses at this month’s, meeting were: Mesdames Fairless (2), Woodroofe and Smith.
