HURRICANE IN U.S.A.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11. The Red Cross announces that a hurricane struck Charleston, in South Carolina, at 7 p.m. with full force, the velocity of the wind being from 75 to 100 miles an hour. It said the hurricane was moving northward and was expected to reach Georgetown (South Carolina) at 11 p.m. DEATHS IN HIGH TIDE. Received August 13, 12 noon. WASHINGTON, Aug. 12. A message from a radio amateur at Charleston (South Carolina) said six persons had been drowned by a 12ft tide resulting from the hurricane. Hundreds of people had been rendered homeless.
