PETROL SHORTAGE
COMPLAINTS IN SOUTH. “EFFORT DEFEATED.” Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Aug. 13. That the petrol shortage is due _to economic conditions in the Dominion and not a world shortage or dearth ol tankers is alleged in a statement by the Otago motor garage proprietors, who state that, while Dunedin garages have to operate under a cut approximating 70 per cent, of the quantity handled last September, the national effort for conservation is defeated by the wastefulness of Government services. The number of motor trade employees brought to unemployment is estimated at nearly 20,000. An appeal is made for an extra million gallons a month. The statement alleges that essential food deliveries have been rationalised by the proprietors, but they are being .hampered by additional pressure and, under the cloak of the war emergency, are threatened with the socialisation of their businesses. .
