(From Our Own Correspondent.) 1 APITI, Aug. 12. A men’s social evening for Privates J. McKenzie and 11. McLean, who were homo on leave, was held recently. Dir W. J. Osborne was in tho chair. Apologies for absence were received from Private 11. McLean, and Messrs W. McKay and C. Spence. The toast of “Our Guest,” was proposed by the chairman and supported by Messrs C. F. Vilcs, C. McKay, J. R. Slrahan and others. Private McKenzie replied. “The Boys in the First and Second Echelons” was in the hands of Mr R. Muir, and this was replied to by Messrs A. G. Prince and J. 11. Cowan. “The Volunteers Who Have Not Passed,’ was in charge of Mr W. McKenzie, and Mr T. Nix, junr., replied. A toast to the Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles, the new local Territorial troops, was proposed by Mr S. F. Morris and replied to by Messrs J. R. Osborne and M. Stewart. Tho final toast “Tho Performers” was entrusted to Mr C. If. S. Osborne and replied to by Messrs S. F. Morris and 11. Wildbore. Items of song and story were interspersed, and those contributing were Messrs S. h. Morns, E. Clifton, 11. G. Mapson, 11. Wildbore and E. Kearney, with Mr Moess at the piano. Community singing was also enjoyed. Private McKenzie was the recipient of a presentation from the Football Club, of which ho has always been a prominent member. The gift was made by Mr L. Pawson, on behalf of his teammates and friends, and was followed by musical honours. Private McKenzie replied. Before tho conclusion of the evening, a committee was formed fo arrange similar men’s social evenings for local men on leave. Those on the committee are Messrs M. 0. McKay, T. Nix, junr., C. McKay, T. K. McLean and W. J. Osborne.
