RANGITIKEI.

MARTON, Aug. Ik. The four and a half miles sealed handicap race for the Marton Harrier Club was won by Don Smith, Iho veteran of the club. First home was F. Hill, who finished second in the handicap event. One of those present was Sergeant J. TT. Dashwood, a member of the Third Echelon on leave, who is president of the club. In the return Rugby match between the Rangitikei and Wanganui junior fifteens: Rangitikci won by 6 points to 5. Superior forward play in the first half paved the way for an Old Boys victory in the third grade match against Marton School, the filial score being 25 points to 9. In a match arranged for patriotic purposes, and played at Marton, Married Men beat Single by 11 points to 6. Soldiers on leave were entertained in the Druids’ Hall oil Friday evening by the Marton Junction branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr A. Hutton (president) was in the chair, and at the official table were Mr F. Burnell (Mayor), Mr G. B. Gregory (president of the Marton branch) and Mr E. B. Gordon, M.P. Members of the Third Echelon and Railway Corps wore entertained at the Civic Theatre on Saturday evening by the Marton Patriotic Society. The theatre was filled and during the interval the Mayor (Mr F. Purnell), as chairman of the Marton Patriotic Society, addressed the large assemblage, and welcomed the' soldiers, each of whom was presented with a money belt and a wallet.
