(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Aug. 12. The fancy dress dance arranged by the stall of the school on Friday, was an ou>tstanding success and a great credit to the teachers, School Committee, and the mothers who had gone Lo so much trouble in dressing the children. Showing sign 6 of careful training, the children entertained the large attendance of adults with some very pretty folk dancing. Each class 1 was given a dainty supper served by a band of ladies. Prizes for tlie best .costumes for infants were awarded: Girl. Pamela Clayton (80-Peep) and Jim Kilminsier (chef); Std. 2-6, Best costume, girl, Shirley Parr (Bride); boy, Bernard Hennessey (Mexican) ; most original costume, girl, Clarice •Sinclair (Survivor of torpedoed liner); boy, Harold Gray (Newsprint). Air E. T. Moody (chairman) and the School Committee gave valuable assistance with the function. A crowded hall on Saturday night showed appreciation of the Shannoji public of the patriotism of six local men who are members of tho 3rd Echelon. The guests of honour were Privates N. Retter, A. McEwen, W. McEwcn, H. Warman, L. Burling and J. McDonald, and their parents and other relatives. The gathering was arranged by the R.S.A. and the Women’s Institute, and took the form of a dance with items, and Mr J. 'J'. Bovis acted as M.C. Solos were sung by Mrs S. Barber, Air C. Cronqucwt and Air J. D. Campbell. The president of tho R.S.A. (Mr F. Thurston) wished the men a speedy return and asked each to accept a pocket wallet. Aire J. Easton, president of the Women’s Institute, also handed each man a gift of cigarettes from the institute, and Air Jacob Hikamaie conveyed the local AJaoris’ good wishes. Air W. Moynihan (director) and Air C. Crouqueet (secretary) made presentations to Pvte. N. Retter from tho directors and staff of the Shannon Dairy Coy. Each man returned thanks for tho hospitality and gifts received. The energetic secretary of the R.S.A. (Air H. AVarnian, senr.) was largely responsible for the arrangements. A feature of tho evening worth noting wa& the fact that five of the men are ex-pupils of tho local school. Prior to leaving her employment on tho 6taff of tho Chief Post Office in Palmerston North, Aliss P. Butterworth was the recipient of a dinner seat and a tea wagon as a mark of appreciation. Staying with Mrs E. Crowther, senr., is Airs Atkinson,of Rotorua. Aliss R. Brann, of Wavorley, and Nurse W. Brann, of Wanganui, were home for the week-end. The School Committee have decided to carry out a suitable programme of tree planting and local bodies and householders are to be"invited to attend. The opportunity will be taken to present certificates of merit to pupils who have achieved success in the home garden club. Tho school_is to loose tho services of two teachers, Aliss Chancy, who is being _ transferred to Eltham, "and Air D. Aitchison, who has been accepted for active service. A further sum of £1 12s 7d lias been handed to the local Patriotic Committee, being the result of a concert given by the upper standards_ at the school and Freda Pini and N. Nott have been selected as represent alive school basketball players lor the Horowhcnua area.

A wedding of considerable local interest was solemnised at Atom Bede’s Church, on Saturday, August 31, between Phyllis Audrey Allison, only daughter of Mrs A. Butlerworth, of Shannon, ‘and Colin Ilislop, second son of Air and Airs F. Cook, of Makerua Plains. Rev. Air SloteBlandy officiated and Airs J. T. Bovis was at the organ. The church had been decorated with early spring blossom by friends of the bride. Entering the church on the arm of Mr K. Gardner (her uncle), the bride looked charming in a gown of French embossed satin made on fitting lines and slightly trained, and her embroidered veil was lent by a friend _ foi the occasion. She carried a sheaf of lilies and a hand-made Egyptian lace hand kerchief, which had been sent her as a. christening gift by an uncle, Mr J. Gard nor, who was away with the Itorces in the Great War and was shortly afterwards killed. In attendance were Aliss Joan Bovis, of Shannon, (a friend)’ and Aliss Phyllis Gardner, of Kaponga (cousin of tho bride), both in dainty long frocks ot deep mauve taffeta, with matching net haloes, and bouquets of cyclamen, _ heath and hyacinths all (o tone. Each maid wore a pearl necklet, the gift of the bridegroom. The two email flower-girls, Helen Gardner (Palmerston North) and Claire McCarthy (Pabatanui), both cousins of the bride, wore ankle-length frocks of periwinkle blue taffeta, with head sprays to tone, and carried posies of primroses, frccsias and blue hyacinths. Mr N. N. Vickers, of Wellington, carried out the duties of best man and Air L. 1.. Aloncy (Palmerston North) was groomsman. Some 99 guests were later entertained at the Parish Ilall, being received by Airs Butterworth, who wore a clover suit with navy accessories and a spray of mauve hyacinths and cyclamen; also by Mrs Cook, in a navy frock and hat. with spray of petunias and cyclamen. Ihe usual toasts were honoured. Congratulations and apologies for absence were received from the Mayor and Alayoress (Air and Airs E. Butt), undo and aunt of the bride, Airs Ilislop (Oaniaru), grandmother of the bridegroom. Airs P.
