PREPARATIONS FOR SEASON

SUMMER GAMES. NORTHERN CLUB’S MEETING. The annual meeting of the Northern Bowling, Croquet anu Tennis Club was held last evening, Mr A. E. '•Lynch presiding. The general report and balance-sheet, as previously published, were adopted. The winning of the Mauawatu Centre’s singles, pairs and rinks championship was the most outstanding event during the season, said the report of the bowling section. Congratulations were extended to the following players who were successful in-these events: Singles, P. 0. Skoglund; pairs, It. Connor and J. Kershaw; rinks, R. Connor, P. S. Larcomb, J. Kershaw and P. O. Skoglund. The report referred to the • club competitions and other activities, and said that generally the- standard of play throughout had shown a very marked improvement, and the good fellowship existing on the greens at all times was a matter for congratulation. The committee expressed thanks to all who had assisted in any way and in particular to the croquet ladies. The report of the croquet section stated that there were 50 members. In the Mauawatu tournament Northern was well represented and among the successes were: Championship doubles, Mesdames Brown and Petrie; A grade handicap singles, Mrs Simpson ; lev-el singles, Mrs K. McDonald; B grade handicap singles, Mrs Reed; C grade association silver button, Mrs Walker. Mesdames Wood and Simpson were at present holding the Pollock Stars. The. winners of club competitions were: Beattie Cup, Mrs Brown; Laurie Cup, Mrs McMurray; Simpson Cup, Mrs Connor; Northern Cup, Mrs Reed; Bryant Cup, Mrs Walker. Wednesday points competitions: A grade, Mrs K. McDonald; B grade, Mrs Reed; _ C grade, Mrs Lovelock. An invitation was accepted from the Feilding Club to compete for their centennial cup, which was confined to play between the Northern a.nd Feilding Clubs. Northern won the trophy. Mention was made of the death of Mrs Beattie, a foundation member and most generous supporter. In the tennis section it was reported that a successful year’s play had resulted. The club had upheld its position in grade matches. Club matches suffered because of the weather and the enlistment of male members for active service. It was hoped that during the coming season membership would be maintained by making a strong drive for members of the junior section.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr K. W. McDonald; vicepresidents, Mr J. A. Grant (bowls), Mrs T. Simpson (croquet), Mr D. Macp'herson (tennis); secretaries, Mr L. Wood (bowls), Mrs A. Lee (croquet), the tennis secretary to be elected later; green supervisor, Mr J. C. Young, greens committee, Mr J. T. Ross (bowls), Mrs L. Wood (croquet), Mr W. M. Sexton (tennis); hon. auditor, Mr W. T. Penny; general secretary and treasurer, Mr P. S. Larcomb. Mr Lynch, the retiring president, thanked the officers for their assistance during his year of office. Tributes vv-ere paid to the work of the! general secretary (Mr Larcomb), the greens supervisor (Mr Young), the retiring president (Mr Lynch), the ladies who had provided afternoon tea and all others who had assisted t'he club. A recommendation that Messrs McDonald and Larcomb be appointed the club’s representatives on the Manavvatu Bowling Centre was adopted. Five new members were elected.

The date of the opening of the new season was fixed for the beginning of October, providing the green is suitable for play.
