LONGER WORKING WEEK.
COUNTY COUNCIL’S ADVOCACY. HASTINGS, Aug. 12. The opinion that tho increased cost of living could have been met by allowing unionists to earn the extra in a 44-hour week instead of making a 5 per cent, increase in award wages was expressed at a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council by the chairman (Mr C. Lassen) when it was stated that the rise would mean that the county would have to find at least another £IOOO which had not been budgeted for, some urgent works would not be proceeded with, and the position would'be made more difficult for ratepayers to meet the demand for an increase of production. “On one hand we have the Court of Arbitration, which sets the wages to be paid, 'and on the other we have the Minister of Marketing, who fixes the price for produce,” said Mr Lassen. “We remember how he refused to accept the recommendations of the committee regarding the price for dairy produce, so between the two what chance has the farmer got!”’ It was decided to protest against the increase in wages without an increase in the working week from 40 to 44 hours.
