SURPRISE ARRIVAL.

LITTLE BRITONS IN VICTORIA. SCHEME TO CONTINUE. •MELBOURNE, Aug. 11._ Some 300 British children arrived In Melbourne over the week-end and will remain in Australia till the end of the war. The arrival was a complete surprise to the Victorian Government, which thought the scheme to evacuate children from the war zone had been suspended. The Government had not been advised that the children were on the way. , . . , About a hundred disembarked at Melbourne. Some are going to relatives and the Children’s Welfare Department is arranging for the others.

The British High Commissioner in Australia (Sii - Geoffrey Whiskard) announced to-day that from now on British children are likely to be evacuated to the Dominions at the rate of more than 2000 a month. The speed of the evacuation from Britain would depend on shipping arrangements.

Tt is quite likely the children would arrive in some of the Dominions earlier than in others. The arrivals may take place at a comparatively early date.
