OPENING TO-MORROW. WINTER CUP AND STEEPLECHASE. (By “Spectator.") T lie Grand National meeting will open at Riccarton to-morrow, when the main events for decision will be the Grand National Steeplechase and the Winter Cup. 'J hero are cloven acceptors for the Steeplechase, all being likely starters. Considerable interest will attach to Padishah’s attempt to repeat his success of last year, and in his meeting with Clarion Call. Neither of these horses dominates the race, as Slayer is a distinct possibility, and Flashlight, who has won at bis last two appearances, will also command much support. Chat, Ballybrit, Erination and Lactose are lesser possibilities. Doubts have been expressed about Flashlight’s ability to stay the journey, but ho certainly has a big advantage in the weights. Padishah, who was second to him in the Homcby SReplocha.sc, is more advantageously weighted on this occasion. The longer distance will also bo in his favour, and Ins schooling work has revealed that ho has not suffered any ill-cffccts trom recent, racing. This great jumper looks almost certain to figure in the money at the finish. Clarion Call, like Padishah, was not scon to his best advantage at the recent Trcnthnm meeting and has not raced since. His chancps cannot be overlooked. The only thing against him is a tendency to jump impetuously. Chat, winner of the Wellington Steeplechase, may possibly find tins raco beyond her, biit Slayer, though lie ran off in the Homcby Steeplechase, has a fino record this season and has a good clianco of securing a place, The Steeplechase should be a great contest, with the topweights likely to be most in favour. The Winter Cup, generally a • very open race, once again presents a problem, and is a race of many possibilities. However, with 23 acceptors, it is obvious that barrier positions will bo an important considcra- | tion over the mile journey. Catalogue will | attempt to make even more turf history | by winning the Winter Cup for the fourth time, and great confidence has been cxniTsscd in his ability to do so, in spite of his weight of 10.11. To all appearances ho io as 111 and well as ever, and his track work has been excellent. Many others in the field rimst be given a good chance. of success, and those commanding most j attention arc Lady Tinkle, Kilrobe. Lady I Montana, Sleeveless, Black Thread, Haughty Winner, Lockit, St. Cloud, Winning Rival, Grey Honour and Nigger Boy. Next to Catalogue, Awapuni will take most interest iii the performances of its pair, l Sleeveless and Anita Foe, from the same stable. Before they went south they were both in excellent order and doing impressive track work, and both will be danger-1 ous. The Brabazon Handicap at the (.'liristchiirch Hunt meeting saw several Winter Cup performers run good races, j those including the winner, Grey Honour, Sr. Cloud, the second horse, who finished I very strongly, and Black Thread, who 1 was third after a good race. Winning Rival and Kilrobe also made good impressions. Haughty Winner's favourite distance is a mile, and his recent success at Timaru shows that he is in the right form. Lady Tinkle has not raced much recently, hut lias seldom been out o-f a place this season and her second at Trent ham drew attention to her chances here. Lady Montana impressed by a good second at Marten recently, and it should not bo forgotten that, she was third in the Winter Cup last year. Lockit and Nigger Boy have both been consistent performers and the latter lias a good light-weight chance. For the other events there are excellent fields. The Enfield Steeplechase will create interest and both the Jumpers’ Flat and the Trial Hurdles may throw some light on the Grand National Hurdles to be run on Thursday.
