(From Our Own Correspondent.) UTUAVAI, Aug. 10.
Tho August meeting at the Utuwai Women’s Institute took the form of an Irish afternoon and there was a good attendance including visitors from Apiti. Two new members were welcomed. Each member was asked to procure and bring to the October meeting one lambskin (washed). The skins will be packed and 6cnt away to make comforts for the men on minesweepers. A elttor of thanks from Miss J. Davis was road. The roll call, an Irish joke, caused much amusement. Mrs 0. M. Stanley gave a talk on institute doings. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs h'lavcll, Mrs Jensen, and Miss Hemmings. The appeal for clothing for refugees was well responded to, as was also the boitle drive. The visitors from Apiti kindly judged tho competitions vfiich resulted: Serviette (made from flourbag and worked with shamrocks), Mrs Foot 1, Miss Hemmings 2, Mrs McEwcn 3; potato, Mrs Batchelor 1, Mrs Coup 2, Mrs Flavell 3; Iceland poppy, Mrs O’Hagan 1, Mrs Coup 2, Mrs McEwcn 3. The “travelling shilling” was won by Miss Alison Wingate. The programme for September is: roll-call, “Cooking 5.0.5.”; competition, plum jam; premier bloom (hyacinth-polyanthus), premier vegetable (leek). The hostesses are Mesdames Searle, Smith and Forbes.
