OPENING CEREMONY.

NOTABLE GATHERING. Received August 8. 12.45 p.m. LONDON. Aug. 9. Mrs Winston Churchill opened the New Zealand Forces Club. She recalled her visit to New Zealand and paid a tribute to the troops whom she had seen training in Southern England. She wished tiie club good luck with the Maori words “Kia Ora.” The High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan) welcomed Mrs Churchill, the Dominions Secretary (Lord Caldecote), General Frey berg. Lady Alice Fercusson (wife of the former Governor-Gen-eral of New Zealand), General Sir lan Hamilton (Commander-in-Ghief of the Dardanelles campaign in 191,5) and the diplomatic of Norway and Brazil. Hundreds of New Zealand Navy. Army and Air Force members and civilians were present. Mr Jordan handed over the club to General Freyberg and the latter expressed satisfaction with the progress of the troops’ training. He said they had three full-scale exercises last month and the course covered was 100 miles in six days on foot with full battle equipment. The ceremony was broadcast to New Zealand.
