NORTHERN CLUB. The report of tho president, , of the Northern Bowling, ..Croquet and Tennis Club (Mr A. E. Lynch) states, inter alia: In reviewing the affairs ot the club during the year ended . Juno 30, 1940, one cannot but bo struck by the many evidences of progress made, and it may be interesting to members to have some further details to those which appear in the financial statement. 'lncreases in membership in both the bowling and, croquet sections are shown in the increase in subscriptions from these sections, and have gone some way towards, compensating the. club for the reduction in revenue from the tennis section. Duo to tho war and the response. from- tennis members to the cal for active service, this section experienced a setback which was only to bo expected. Donations to the funds of the club amount to £l2. 14s 3d and these members who are responsible arc tbanked for their assistance. Our total receipts amount to £463 14s ad, a very considerable sum, hut compared with the previous year’s £574 13s 4d, this shows a reduction of ci’cr £100: it must he remembered, .howover, that last year an ai union brought in £25 and the tea proceeds were in the vicinity of £6O. However, this year the expenses of running tho club aie £396 5s 6d, as against £438 l4s 7d last year. Economies have been made wherever they would not affect the progress of the club. We .have expended £62 8s Id on binding* and plant, and finished the year with an ovedraft of £1 17s 2d; altogether a year which demonstrates that the club lias continued to progress and develop tho grounds which wo are leasing from the City Council. The bowling members comprise many enthusiasts and to them we are uidcbtcc for tho erection of a caretaker s shed, and for alterations canned out to the pavilion, t.hc cost of.materials only being borne by the club. Since tbc season closed early in May further work has been undertaken, including the erection of a sod shelter, tbc painting of buildings and scats and a wind break along one side of flic No. 2 bowling green. The club lias a large area of n aying greens, approximately. five acres in all. and For the supervision of those we are grateful to Mr J. C. Young. Wo feel that his enthusiasm for tho work prevents bun from realising how much time ho devotes to the club, but wo do appreciate very much the contribution he makes to lhe enjoyment ot members. The club lias made a name tor itself as the possessor of good playing areas and this results from the expert attention provided. After over eleven years of very loyal service, Mr George Lynch resigned from his position of greenkeeper and we were indeed sorry to part with him. His energy was Wonderful, and during Ins years with the club he saw it more than double its size in membership and playing areas. Mr A. 11. Ililc lias taken up bis duties as successor to Mr Lynch and it is anticipated that" the greens will continue to receive every care and attention. J lie cio-1 quet members have again assisted the club bv their excellent afternoon tea arrangements and the funds have benefited by over £27, the surplus from this effort. It was with very great regret that the members learned of the passing of Messrs I. Morshead, E. W. Osborne, and G. 11. Bennett and Mrs C. R. Beattie, all esteemed members of the club, to whose relatives the club’s sympathy was extended, lhe c ub lias granted honorary membership several members who have enlisted for active service, and trusts to welcome them all back at an early date. I wish to thank members for their loyalty to the club and to myself during the two years I havo been president, and wish my successor in office the. same measure of pleasure and happiness that J havo enjoyed. In conclusion I would like to express rny personal thanks, and those of all the members, to our secretarytreasurer (Mr P. S. Larcomb), for his assistance and for tho expeditious manner and meticulous care given to tho duties with which he has been entrusted. Members are notified m this issue that I tho annual general meeting of the Northern Bowling, Tennis and Croquet O.ub will bo held on Monday at 7.30 p.m. at tbc clubs pavilion.- A largo attendance is anticipated and intending members. . either. for the bowling, croquet or tennis sections, are i cordially invited.
