RETURNS NOT FURNISHED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 9. A scries of summons charges brought by tho Commissioner of Taxes in the Police Court were admitted to-day by John Charles Edmunds. For the Crown, Mr V. R. Meredith said Edmunds was a dealer in secondhand cars in a fairly large way at Newmarket. He also owned and trained racehorses. Ho came from England in 1937 and Iris business transactions for the past two years had been investigated by an income tax inspector. He was considered to be a very unsatisfactory person to deal with. He had not yet made his income returns for 1938 and 1939. and default assessments had been made. Counsel for the defence said Edmunds had been careless; there was no intention to defraud. On the charge of failing to furnish returns. Mr C. R. Orr-Wallcer, S.M., fined defendant £IOO. and for failure to register under the Employment Promotion Act ho was fined £5 and costs. Two other charges were adjourned.
