FOXTON.

At a social and dance in the Masonic Hall, guests were Sergeant-Major A. C. Baker, Sergeant Ward, Privates L. H. Coley/ C. Abbott, C. D. Knowstub, H. Apatari, M. McGregor, IT. liippolitc, R. W. Bell, I. Cummcrficlcl, and Evelcigh, and Sapper R. D. Healey. The Mayor (Mr Porreau) presented a silver cigarette case and a monetary gift to each guest.. Messrs IT. H. I’odmore and E. Corlctt were M.C.’s and extra dance numbers were played by Mrs W. J. Bowden and Mr N. Neilsen. Prizes for novelty dances were won as follow: Lucky Gay Gordons, Mra M. Baker and Mr W. Walker: Monte Carlo waltz, Mr and Mrs ]L Read; lucky spot waltz, Miss Parfitt and partner. Entertaining items were contributed by Mrs L. J. Chittenden, Privates Apatari, Hippolite and McGregor and Mr P. Ilakaraia. Mr Podmoro expressed the pleasure felt by all at being able to gather together to honour the sixteen Foxton men who were serving with the Third Echelon. Mr Podmoro also pointed out that although the dance was being held under the auspices of the combined lodges it was a civic function and not solely a lodge gathering. Mr Perreau, speaking on behalf of the Foxton and district residents, said how much they appreciated the opportunity of being able to attend such an important gathering and extended his thanks to the lodges and the Patriotic Committee. Mr Perreau referred to the fact that there were sixteen local men serving with tho Third Echelon, at present on leave and the large attendance present was a fitting tribute to these men. Mr D. Brooks, be said, had handed him a list containing the names of fourteen local men of the 6th Mounted Rifles, who were going into camp at an early date as n.c.o.’s. and to these men he took the opportunity of offering his congratulations. Sergeant-Major Brooks (president), spoke on behalf of the R.S.A. Musical honours were accorded the guests of the evening. The gifts for those men who were unable to attend were handed by Mr Porreau to Mr Jas Macdonald, who undertook to see that they were presented to them. Sergeant-Major A. C. Baker an old Foxton boy, replied on behalf of the men. , , „ Mrs M. Gore, of Purcell btreet, Foxton, underwent an unenviable ordeal recently. She slipped just outside her back door in the evening and fell heavily, splintering a bone in her leg. She was unable lo get up and lay where she fell until the next morning when Mr 11. Jacobsen discovered her plight. After receiving medical attention she was removed to tho Palmerston North Hospital where she is now reported to be making good progress towards recovery.

At a meeting of the members of the Foxton Women’s Institute committee, arrangements were made for the tenth birthday party of the Institute. New members elected were Dr. Platts Mills, senr., and Miss M, Bowden. The death occurred at the residence of her daughter in Wanganui, this week, ot Mrs M. J. Rosvall. of Palmerston North, mother of Mr S. Rosvall, of Foxlon Bench, Mr 11. D. Dawson, who lias taken over the position of honorary secretary of the Foxton Centennial Committee, has drawn up a statement of accounts in connection with the committee’s activities from its inception in April last year, to August 19, 1940. This shows receipts: Donations, £IBB 13s Id, competitions, including euchre, £9 7s 3d. sideshows, £lls 6s Od, a total of £313 7s. Expenditure : Bank charges, 10s, concert £25 4s Bd, salary paid to Mr ,T. R. Newton, £42, sideshows £l6 8s 9d. leaving a credit balance of £5 18s 6d. The committee lias yet to receive a subsidy of approximately £7O from the Government.
