WINTER CUP TRIALS.

GOOD WORK AT RICCARTOX. CATALOGUE SHOWS UP. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, July 10. Winning Rival. Catalogue and Dictate all did good Winter Cup trials when the final gallops were held on the outside of the course proper at Ricc-arton this morning. After overnight rain the courso was on the “dead” side. Muffler put up tho best six furlongs gallop, while the best five went to Dictate. Scarteen and Great Flight were the best over half a mile.

The steeplechasers over the National course also attracted attention.

The Wrecker ran a mile in 1.45 2-5. the first four furlongs taking 51 4-sscc. Ryetown ran half a mile in 52 l-ssce. Great Flight beat Pleading by nearly a length over four run in 51 4-ssec.

Haughty' Winner was far too good lor Master Dingle, Balmentcr and Raroa over seven furlongs run in 1.36 3-5. the first three in 40 4-sscc. Haughty Winner was hard hold until near tho finish, where he was allowed to run along freely. Alma, after running the first, half mile in 51 4-s;ec, finished her mile in 1.46 3-5. Winning Rival did an attractive trial over seven furlongs, drawing away to beat Kilrobc and St. Cloud by several lengths in the final furlong. They reached the three furlongs in 38 l-sscc and Winning Rival completed the task in 1.32 2-5. , Muffler, after giving Stylosa a start, finished a neck in front at tho end of six. furlongs run in 1.19 3-5, the final four .ui 53 3-sscc. This was a useful effort. Nightglass galloped away from Haughty Lad over five furlongs in 1.6 3-5, while Dorta, Wild Coon and Alias finished in the order named in similar time.

Disdain, brought home from the halfmile by Royal Chief, ran a mile in 1.46. Lord Midas and Lockheed broke, away in front of Rebel Star starting at the six furlongs peg, but Rebel Star moved up with a furlong to go and was with Lord Midas at the end of 1.21 2-5; the last four furlongs took 55 l-sscc. Camphor gave Gentility a start and a narrow beating over five furlongs in 1.7 1.5, Ripley and Ilugine doing the same time, while The Vulture Avas too fast for Gnohill in 1.6. Hanlon beat Prudent Princo and Settlement, the last-named stopping quickly, over a mile in 1.50, the first half taking 54 l-ssec. Scarteen ran half a mile in 51 3-ssec, doing it wellPadishah and Limbohm were clour of Clarion Call until the concluding stages of a mile, where Clarion Call moved up, the trio finishing in lino in 1.55 2-5, the first four taking 57 3-ssec, Synthetic shaded Stabilise over six furlongs in 1.21 2-5, the final half being done in 53 3-ssec. Catalogue did a good trial when he was hard held, well clear of Raeburn, with Wagner further back, on tho completion of seven furlongs in 1.35, the first three taking 39 3-sscc. Dictate had half a length to spare from Night Hawk -at the end of five furlongs run in 1.5 2-5. This was the best effort over the distance. Look it and Wardress, after reaching the end of three furlongs in 39 _2-ssec : corriploted seven in 1.33 4-5, while Nigger Boy teat Spanish Lad by half a length over the samo ground in 1.34 3-5, the first three being done in 40 2-s«cc.

Anita Foe and Sleeveless (lid six furlongs in 1.21. while Strip was a neck in front of Bologna in 1.20 4-5. Foxotto was a couple of lengths clear of Cherokee over half a. mile run in 52 l-ssco.. while Rebel Chief went, up the Kick in 52 3-ssoc. Slaver (.T. Mcßae) and Blue Steel (J. Chaplin) were companions in a round oyer the steeplechase fences, the display being marred when Blue Steel, usually a safe jumper, fell heavily at Cutts’s fence, landing on his neck. He was winded for a few minutes, but appeared little the worse for the wall. Chat (S. Wright) and Lactose (P. Jarvis) were sent over the same ground. They did well until Cutts’s fence, which Lactose hit, though ho stood up. Gay Boa (K. Jennings) and Joy Boa (J. Richards) went at a slow pace In a round of the National course. Joy Bca lost ground at most of the fences. Gay Boa got over Cutts’s exceptionally well. Colonel French (T. Boyle) made a better showing than Tnraki (P. Boyle) over four hurdles. In a similar trial In the Dark (L. Gough) was far superior to Good Sun (A. Leach).
