Hurricanes at Costa Rica and St. Petersburg had done enormous damage. A large proportion of the banana crop at Costa Rica was wiped out and at St. Petersburg houses were levelled and 3500 acres of forest destroyed. The Grand National Steeplechase of £IOOO, three and a-half miles, was won by Mr C. Morse’s Te Arai carry! H; 11.9. Lovell (10.7) was second and Sir Lelh’e (10.4) third The Mayor of Now York (Judge Gaynor) when about to leave for Europe was fired upon and wounded. The bullet was extracted from just below the oar.
