(From Our Own Correspondent. ) OTAKI, Aug. 5. Privalcs Hector and Jack Merry Ices, sons of Mi and Mrs C. W. Merry lees, are on leave. _ _ The new fire engine for Olaki arrived on Saturday and was inspected by members of the Fire Board, borough councillors, and the brigade. The engine was favourably commented cn and demonstrations were given and pleased a largo gathering of onlookers. The rainfall at Otaki Beach for July totalled .96in, the maximum daily fall being ,34in on the 12th. Rain fell on nine days. During the month there were 17 frosts, while snow appeared on the ranges on five occasions! An earthquake was recorded at 11.10 a.m. on the 22nd,
