SACRED CROSSES
LOYAL FRENCH FORCES. EMBLEM OF LIBERATION. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph —Copyright.) Received August 6, 1.30 p.m. LONDON. Aug. 5. After Cardinal Hiiisley’s decision to give every Roman Catholic man on active service and defence work a blessed Cross General de Gaulle (Com-, mander of the free French forces) announced that his iorces would carry the Cross of Lorraine in addition,, to the Tricolour. One of General dc Gaulle s colleagues explained that the Cross of Lorraine had a dual significance because it was the emblem of Joan of Arc’s fight to liberate France and a reminder that the Province of Lorraine, which was freed in 1918, is now under the German, yoke. All ships and planes carrying French crews will bear the Cross. A Vichy message says M. Ybarne Garay (Minister of Youth and Family) stated that one of the aims of the Government’s family programme was to substitute the payment of salaries for individual meii- bv payments in accordance with the number of a worker's children. Alexandria reports that French warships flew the White Ensign in celebration of the Queen’s birthday.
