PAHIATUA

BOWLING CLUB. Another successful year financially was reported at the annual meeting of the | Pahiatua Bowling Club, on Saturday even- i ing, at which Mr L. T. Herbert presided. ' Hr ITrustcott acted as secretary. The good state of the balance-sheet was in no small measure due to the care with which the treasurer and committee had administered the funds, stated the report. Although this must be gratifying to members, they would doubtless realise that the incoming committee would still have to watch the finances very carefully', as a great many things had to bo attended to in the near future, and increased costs also had to be faced. (The balance-sheet showed a credit of £lB 160 Id, compared with a credit balance of £8 last year). Thanks to. an energetic green committee the green right through the season had been in an excellent condition, and had been praised by visitors. The usual competitions had been held, and congratulations were extended to the winners; Senior singles, V. Boyens; senior pairs, Y. Boyens and It. Gregory; senior junior pairs, F. Cosford and A. J. Goer; intermediate singles, \V. Bowden; junior singles, W. Feascy. Players participated in many games for the various cups and shields, but won back only the Oxley Cup and retained the Gosling Stars. In both the Dixon Cup and the Byrne Cup matches the local teams were narrowly defeated. A new competition was held at the end of the season with a full day’s rink tournament. Two local rinks were winners and run-nm-s-np, and the committee thanked .Messrs Gregory and Pilkinton for the arranging and running the competition. An asset was the purchase of an honours board on which all previous past presidents’ and secretaries’ names had been inscribed. Donations for the payment wore voluntarily subscribed by several members. At a recent committee meeting’ it Jiacl been reported that the estate of the late Mr J. -Murphy had presented a sum o monev for a memorial. The committee had decided that the allocation be left to the annua! meeting. Thanks were conveyed to all who had assisted in various ways. Members stood in silence as a mark ot respect to, the late Messrs H. Kelsey and K Stack whose deaths were mentioned in the annual report. Resignations received from Messrs A. Carlyon, I. Clark and M F. Kvan. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr C. Arrow; president, Mr L. T. Herbert; yiccnrcsidenls Messrs W. Britland, Kusfcl, and Dr H. Paterson; secretary', Mr A. J. Hodd suggested that ways bo* devised to build a new pavilion, hut the meeting thought it unwise to go into the matter. Mr Tniscott suggested repairing the. front fenco of the green and it was decided that a working bee be formed and material up to £5 bo purchased, for the repairs.

PLEASANT FUNCTION. A pleasant evening was held at the residence of Mr G. Oxley on Saturday evening, to celebrate his 73rd birthday. The time was spent in dancing and community singing. Approximately 30 guests were present, including some from Palmerston North and Masterton. The birthday cake, made and iced by Mrs Milier, was in the centre of the table adorned by 73 candles. Supper was served by Mesdames Sillett and MilIcr. . Mr T. Stanley, on behalf of the guests, extended to Mr Oxley good wishes. Mr Oxley suitably replied. FAREWELL TO MINISTER

There was a large attendance at; the final service, conducted at Si. Andrew's Church, Porigaron, by Rev. A. A. Armstrong. after which a social hour was spent. Opportunity was taken to hid farewell to Mr Armstrong, who, as moderator, had acted as minister during his period in Pahialua. Mr J. W. Murray (secretary of the board of managers) spoke in warm appreciation of the good work done by the moderator, who had won the esteem and respect of the jieoplc. lie found it hard to accept the separation, but hoped that the change would mean goed health and further service for Mr and Mrs Armstrong and family. As an indication of the sincerity of the sentiments expressed, he presented a token of their own. as well as the good wishes of many outside the congregation who had received help and inspiration from the moderator’s care of the people. The presentation took the form of a beautiful eiderdown quilt. Suitable reply was made by Mr Armstrong, Who said the Pongaroa Church interests'bad been very close to his heart and lie only regretted that bis strength and time did not permit doing a great deal more than had been achieved. When his successor was settled, lio trusted they would receive even greater attention. In the meantime they would have to carry on with temporary help as could be arranged. He had kept in the first place love for the people themselves, and tried to bring a gospel of uplift by spiritual tcachin" and sympathetic interest tn their whole life. Especially had he boon interested in the children. He regretted deeply the necessity of the change, but would cherish kindest memories of all and_ find inspiration for the future in thotr loyalty, affection and generosity.
