MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. SECOND BOUND COMPLETED. The final game in the senior A division of the second round of the Manawatu Hockey Association’s championship series was played in. conjunction with the known handicap competition at the Hokowiiitu Domain bn Saturday afternoon in ideal weather conditions. Tho standard of play was not up to that of previous Saturdays when the grounds were not so hard. In the championship series Broadway beat University in the play-off to decide the winners of the second round of the senior A grade. Broadway will now meet United Sports to decide the champions of the season. In the senior B grade High School, who won the second round, will meet United, the winners of the first round. Broadway are leading in the junior grade. Results on Saturday were: Senior A.—Broadway 1 v. University 0; Air Force 2 v. United Sports 1; Phoenix 2 v. Woodville 1. Senior 8.-—United Sports 13 v. Broadway 3; Woodville a bye. Junior. —Broadway 7 v. High School A 0; Phoenix G v. High School B 1.

SENIOR A. I Hard, fast play was the order in the game between Broadway and University in which the only goal of the match was scored ten minutes before time. University’s chances of victory were considerably lessened by the absence of the Lawry-Petcli forward combination, tho former being unable to play owing to an injury received in a previous game. The final issue was always in doubt, both teams playing with grim determination. G. Petch played a sound game fox University,- but the honours of tho game went to L. Hart, Broadway’s goalkeeper, whose numerous brilliant saves kept tho honours of the game from University. Broadway’s goal wias scored by J. Beale from a scramble near the goal-mouth. Messrs F. McLachlan and It. Hoare were the umpires. United Sports were unable to alter their run of defeats registered during tho season at the hands of Air Force. Although United Sports held a territorial advantage practically throughout the game, their many attacking movements lacked the finish needed. Air Force’s goalkeeper played a sound game. United Sports were not given many chances. Air Force’s goals were notched by Stewart, while M. Byers scored for United Sports. The umpires were Messrs D. Hoare and R. Irwin.

The Recreation Ground, , Woodville. was dry and firm for the meeting of the Woodville team and Phoenix in a senior A grade match. The visitors ran out winners by 2 goals to 1 after a fast and very keenly contested exhibition. The teams were very evenly matched and it was not until well on in the second 6pell, when Woodville lost Stitt through a leg injury, that Phoenix began to assert themselves.Until his retirement, Stitt liad been a tower of strength in both defence and attack. Leach, Christensen and Forbes also played good hockey. Botting was the outstanding visitor, his brilliant dashes down the left wing being a frequent source of trouble to Woodville. The defensive work of both teams was particularly good, Vogt (Woodville) standing out in this department. Leach’s goal for Woodville from a smart centre by Christensen, was a spectacular one. Booth and Fislier goaled for Phoenix in the closing stages. The umpires were Messrs B. Palenski and D. Wilton.

SENIOR B.

The United Sports and Broadway senior B teams were not at full strength and consequently their game was a very- ragged one. The United forwards were always dangerous and it was not long before they bad scored numerous goals. For the winners,. goals wore scored by D. Hoare (7), Whitelaw (2). Whibley (2), Yates and 0. Oliver, while Knight (2) and Sykes scored for Broadway. Messrs Levy and Byers were the umpires.

JUNIOR.

High School B juniors were no match for Phoenix, who held a territorial advantage throughout practically the whole game. Goals for Phoenix were scored by D. Smith, B. Gardiner, Gregory, Westwood, Lewis, and Woodrooie while J. Anderson scored for High School B. Messrs McDonald and Rendle were the umpires. With a strong forward combination Broadway kept High School A on the defensive for most" of their game, although High School’s occasional fast attacks were dangerous. M. Dilks (6) and Jones scored for Broadway, and goals for High School were notched by Perrin (2), Persson and B. Nicliols. The umpires were Messrs Sutton and Sweetman.
