The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) has been confined to his home in Northland for the past two days with a slight cold. The death has occurred after three months’ illness of Mr L. J. McKean, a leading New South Wales barrister and senior Crown Prosecutor. He was 55 years of age. Colonel A. H. Herbert, of Eketahuna, has been nominated Wairarapa area leader for an Auxiliary Reserve formed to defend the immediate locality if need be. The Gazette announces the appointment of Captain S. E. Gilsh.nan from the Reserve of Officers, Manawatu Mounted Rifles, to bo Captain (temporary) . He is posted to the Ist Battalion, Wellington Regiment (City of Wellington’s Own). Consequent upon the resignation of Colonel C. H. Weston, K.C., from the office of president of the New Zealand National Party, the position of head of the Opposition organisation outside the House of Representatives is now held by Mr A. Gordon, of Hamilton. The death has occurred at Wellington of Mr E. A. Dawson, who had been treasurer of the New Zealand Boxing Council since its inception sixteen years ago. Previously lie was with the Railway Department, being station master at Thorndon.—Press Association. Two of the oldest residents of Petone, father and son, died this week, Mr Benjamin Mudgway, aged 93, passing away on Tuesday and Mr Walter William Mudgway, aged 70. on Wednesday. Mr Benjamin Mudgway, whose own father was also a Hutt Valley resident, purchased a block of land well-known years ago as Mudgway’s Farm. His son had been farming elsewhere since.—Press Association.
