TRYING ORDEAL.

MOTORIST’S PLIGHT. MISHAP NEAR RAETIHI. Following a trying ordeal throughout the greater part of Wednesday night, pinned to the floor-boards of an overturned car and suffering from the cold, with painful injuries, including a fractured, leg, Mr Fraser Scott, a farmer, living near Raetihi, was admitted to the'Raetihi Hospital yesterday morning. A break-down crew from Raetihi, under the direction of Constable Cave, worked from 7 a.m. till 9.15 a.m. to extricate Mr Scott from the wreckage of his car. About 11.45 p.m. on Wednesday Mr Scott, whose farm is on the Mangaetoroa Road, about 12 miles from Raetihi, was motoring home -with a passenger, Mr Warren Tahana. Within two miles of his home, when attempting to turn a corner on a road less than 10ft wide, Mr Scott’s car ran off the road and overturned. The trunk of a tree pierced the windscreen and pinned Mr Scott’s legs to the floorboards, with the result that he was hanging head down. His companion did not recover consciousness for a considerable time, but on coming to Mr Tahana found himself unable to relieve the driver and sought assistance from a farm-house in the vicinity. By the time the break-down van could be summoned from Raetihi Mr Scott had been hanging head down for several hours.
