Dr R. Blunden, of Otago, has gamed his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, states a cable message. Sergeant J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, who suffered trouble with a foot while in Trentham camp, has been passed unfit for service overseas.
Hon. Mark Fagan (Speaker of the Legislative Council) has returned to his home after several weeks in hospital. He hopes to resume his official duties next month.
A New Zealander, Dr. Basil Bibby, has been appointed dean of the famous dental school; Tufts College, states a Boston cablegram.. He is a graduate of Otago University. Tljie death occurred suddenly yesterday at Patea of Captain Gibson, of the coastal vessel Inalia. When the lnaha sailed from Wanganui for Patea on Saturday afternoon Captain Gibson was in good health. He had been in command for many years.
Mr E. Bevin (Minister of Labour) has been unanimously adopted as the Labour candidate for Central Wandsworth, states the British Official Wireless. A contest is unlikely. The vacancy was created through the elevation of Colonel H. L. Nathan to the peerage.
Cabled advice has been received from the Air Ministry by Mr WBobert Eisher, of Gore, that Ins son, Pilot-Officer R. R. P. Fisher, who was reported missing on May 29, is now safe and is in an English hospital. Press Association. .
Tlie Bishop of Wellington (Rt. Rev. PI Holland), who conducted services at All Saints’ Church and St. Peter’s Church, yesterday, the first occasion since his return from England, left for Wellington to-day. During his stay the Bishop was the guest of Mr and Mrs D. S. Wylie. Hon. W. Lee Martin (Minister of Agriculture) has' partly resumed Ins official duties after several weeks absence because of ill-health. He is attending meetings of Cabinet and caucuses of the Parliamentary Labour Partv, hut Hon. F. Langstone, who has been deputising for Mr Martin, will continue to administer Ins portfolios for another week or two.
The appointments of Hon. J. A. Hanan and Hon. C. J. Carrington as members of the Legislative Council expired at midnight last night. Both have served, in the Council for 14 years. They were first appointed by the Coates Administration on June 17, 1926, and on the expiry of their original terms of appointment seven vears later they were reappointed by the Coalition Government. When their retirement was referred to the Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser), last evening, he said the question of the reappointment or otherwise of Mr Hanan and Mr Carrington had not been considered.
