OBITUARY. . The death occurred at his home in Konini of Mr Thomas Avery, at the age of 82 years. Mr Avery was a widely known and respected settler of the Bush district. Born at Taita, Lower Ilutt, the late Mr Avery was the fourth son of the late Mr George Avery. He was engaged in farming near Masterton for a year until he bought land in 1880 at Mangaramarama, near Pahiatua. In 1883 he married the only daughter of the late John Hall, oi Pahiatua, and moved to Konini in 1591 where stood dense bush. This was cleared by his own efforts." In his day Mr Avery was a prominent athlete, especially in jumping, throwing the hammer and shot events. At the early age of 14 years lie competed in Wellington at a big sports meeting and won all the jumping events. At 16 years he was prominent in hammer throwing and shot putting. ■ At the first Caledonian sports mueting held in Marton in 1882, Mr Avery was awarded a special prize medal for the greatest number of points gained at the meeting A't the first Pahiatua sports meeting all the jumping and putting the shot events wore taken by Mr Avery. Even when past his prime lie competed with a jumping champion, the late Mr T. Troy, and tied with him. •

Mr Avery was of a quiet and generous disposition and took a keen interest in all amateur sports. He was a director of the Konini Co-operative Dairy CoLtd., since it was first formed in 1917, but had to resign recently on account of health reasons. Thermo are left to mourn his passing his three sons, Messrs 11. A., H. T„ and 11. C. S. Avery, all of Konini, and two daughters, Mrs Charles Avery, of Palmerston North ,and Mrs W. ciaphain, of Manawatu Heads. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Tuesday last. Rev. K. F. Button, Anglican minister, of Pahiatua, conducted a service at St. Peter’s Church and later performed the final rites at the Pahiatua Cemetery.
