HARD LABOUR.
SENTENCE FOR ASSAULT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 14. For- common assault committed on a young woman in a motor-car on a lonely road near Papatoetoe late on the night of May 26, Robert Eric McCormick, aged 27, a labourer, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour. He pleaded guilty before Mr F. H. Levien, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The police said that at the request of a soldier friend McCormick consented to drive the girl from the Papakura camp back to Auckland. Nearing Papatoetoe he turned down a side road telling her he was going to see a friend. When the girl attempted to jump out he pushed her down and knocked a tooth out. When the car stopped she got out end scieamed. lie got her back into the car and. .when two men appeared drove off. Ihey chased and overtook him and got the girl away from him. In passing sentence the Magistrate remarked that lie- could not understand why McCormick was not charged more seriously.
