TREE-PLANTING IN BOROUGH

The Young Farmers’ Club’s Centennial tree-planting scheme and the general question of tree-planting in the borough came up for discussion at the meeting of the Borough Council, when Cr. E. J. Harding stated that he had noticed the Young Farmers’ Club was blaming the council for the delay in connection with its treeplanting scheme. Cr. Harding asked if the council’s sub-committee, set up to go into the matter with the club, was functioning. The IVfayor (Mr It. It. Jolinston) said the sub-committee had done its work and was now waiting for the young farmers to submit a list of trees available so that planting could be commenced. Cr. A. H. Hustwick said ho had perused lists sub mitted by the clerk, but these comprised only the larger varieties of trees, which ho considered were not suitable for planting within the borough. In the course of a general discussion, the proposal that the club should plant trees near the old rub'bish tip was mentioned. Cr. Hustwick said lie did not favour establishing a_ plantation of pines because the council should- look to the future and see that trees were planted there that would ultimately he of use to it. The Mayor suggested that more shrubs and ornamental trees could be planted to advantage in Fountaine Square. Cr. Hustivick expressed the view, in which Cr. J. T. Horne concurred, that planting of shrubs underneath the larger trees in the square was not to the best advantage. It was resolved, on' the motion of Cr. Hustwick and the Mayor, that it be left to the reserves committee to go into the question of planting shrubs in Fountaine Square at suitable place, away from tlie larger trees. It was further do-

cided that in the event of the proposal that the Young Faimers’ Club should carry out tree-planting in the Recreation Ground not being proceeded with, the reserves committee should negotiate with it for a suitable scheme of planting to he put into operation at the site of the rubbish tip.
