COUNTY WORK.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —While being an advocate of a genuine war effort, by which I mean the production of food, clothing, munitions, or work of any description with a direct bearing on the efficiency of our fighting forces* I resent very much the taking advantage of the position by such bodies as the Kairanga County Council in passing resolutions to endeavour to force the workers back to their old conditions for no other reason than that they object personally to the .40-hour week. It is a personal matter with them. They see in the war conditions a chance to put the worker back where they, in their biased opinion, consider he should be, and should for ever remain. Oan any of your readers see any definite war effort in their particular resolution ? I would like to ask the councillors whether, in the event of their Ivor vers agreeing to work eight hours every Saturday, they would subsidise each man’s pay £ for £ and donate same to some patriotic fund. Certainly, the Kairanga County Council have made a free-of-interest loan to the Government. but this does not constitute a.n individual effort; and until, individuals, whether constituting a council or any other collective body, can set a personal example, they should not endeavour to impose sacrifices on others. In any case, who are the real owners of the £2OOO loaned? In conclusion I wish to state that labour will not he wanting for any. genuine war effort that is required, but it must be genuine and not camouflaged.—l am, etc.. C. H. JONES. 4 Ngata Street, 14/6/40.
