TE ARAKURA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) TE ARAKUIIA, June 12. The To Arakura Women’s Institute held a social and dance in the local hall when the l stage was decorated with lemon and orange calendulas and greenory. Songs by tho local school girls’ choir (unaccompanied) were enjoyed and skipping and tap dancing by Ruth McDowall, received hcarly applause. Al.C.’s wore Messrs G. Sannc and L. E; Hansen. Vocal solos by Mrs Parker with Miss D. Parker at the piano, and Mrs L. Smith with Mr Smith as accompanist were heartily encored. Mrs H. M. Whisker, (president of the Women's Institute) thanked all for their attendance and specially the artists for tho delightful programme rendered. Mrs Whisker presented the winners of the points competitions with their prizes as follow: —Monthly competitions: Mrs Tait 1, Mrs Wevell 2, Mrs Bradley 3; flower competition, Mrs Thomas and 'Mrs Bradley (tied). A vote of thanks was accorded the M.C'., doorkeeper, Mr J. J. Hume, and the members who had Assisted in providing the supper. Novelty dances were won by Miss J. Burnham and Mr J. Hughes (Gay Gordons), Miss P. O’Regan and Mr T. Dewc, (lucky spot waltz). Friends of Mrs McDowall_ (Aorangi) will be sorry to learn that she is in a private hospital and will wish her a speedy recovery. Mr F. J. Baxter has returned from a holiday spent in the Auckland province. Mr and Mrs P. Hansen arc at present spending a holiday in Auckland. Mr H. Talbot has been a visitor, to Wellington this week.

At the Juno meeting of the To Arakura Women’s Institute Mrs H. M. Whisker presided and welcomed the visitors from the Colyton Institutc./Thc motto was: “Sow kind acts and memory’s garden will bo sweet.” Apologies for absence were received fnom Mcsdames ,J. J. Hume, Russell Kendrick, Cheetham, Ansin, and Parker. Miss L. M. Pearce (Colyton) gave an interesting talk on needlework, etc. Minis Pearce had brought with her a varied collection of needlework which was much admired. The winners of competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs Bradley; vegetables, Mrs D. Lewer 1, Mrs Baker 2, Mrs Firth 3; Miss G. Baker (junior); shortbread, Mrs Tait 1, Airs Bradley 2, Mrs Wevell 3; Miss Baker (junior). Afternoon tea was served by Mcsdames J. H. Bennett, G. Firth, 1). Lower and Miss Hansen. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss Pcarcc for her talk and tho visitors from Colyton who judged tho competitions. Thanks wore also to the hostesses, stall steward, and pianist. The July competitions will be savoury mould and best bloom.

Congratulations are extended to Mrs Havthornc for her success in the cookery section at the Manawatu A. and P. Show. Mr and Mrs Wevell are staying with relatives in Wellington. Congratulations are also extended to Messrs N. E. Hansen, D. T. Johnston and L. E. Hansen (To Arakura) on being awarded third place in tho bacon class of tho Pig Club competition.
