BOROUGH AFFAIRS

COUNCIL BUSINESS. The Feilding Borough Council mot last evening, the Mayor (Mr T. L. Seddon) presiding. Also present were Crs A. C. McCoririndale, A. C. Buist, W. Andrews, P. B. Desmond, H. J. Dewe, V. E. Smith, T. Burne, C- B. McClure and P. G. Guy.

Six enlargements of photographs showing industrial activities of Podding and an aerial view of the saleyards, which had been exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition, were received, and it was decided that they be framed and jilaced on the library, walls.

The treasurer reported that the council had a credit of £2287, 12s Id in the bank at May 31, 1940. The district fund account snowed a debit of £2409, as compared with a debit of £2609 at May 31. 1939.,

The Ministry of Housing submitted a provisional plan of a proposed State housing scheme in Marlborough and Monmouth Streets.—lt was decided to advise the department that the frontage allowed in respect of two units was 50 feet, whereas the by-laws provided for a frontage of 52.8 ft. The Mayor said that the Housing Department was not bound by borough bylaws, but it had shown a willingness to co-operate in regard to similar suggestions. Cr Smith said trie plan should not be approved until it was found out what the intentions of the department in respect of the centre of the block. The department had mentioned on the plan that the centre was to be held by the department meanwhile. Cr Smith said that tile council should have some say m the town-planning of Feilding. It was decided- to write asking the department to explain, the matter. Arising out of an injury to a carcase at the abattoir, the council decided to ascertain the legal position in regard to liability, in repect of accidents occurring at the abattoir. The council decided to install additional street lights in Kimbolton Road and South Street, while in regard to Haybittle Street consideration was deferred. The matter of shifting a light at the corner of South Street and Manchester Street was also deferred. Cr Guy stated that the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board had installed three units at its sub-station; the council expressed its satisfaction with this. An informal discussion took place regarding New Zealand literature in the public library, and it was stated that surveys of the history of New Zealand would be arriving shortly, in addition to a full set of Centennial volumes . In reply to a question by Cr McCorkindale, the borough representative on the Palmerston North Hospital Board (C'r Smith) explained the reduction in the borough’s levy this year, He regretted that the amount of the reduction (£47) was not larger, but explained that the levy was computed in relation to the social security receipts of the board, considering that the capital value of the I eilding borough had risen considerably over the past two years, and having regard to the fact that the levy was based on the capital value, Feilding was fortunate in-receiving a reduction, be it ever so small. , , , The Mayor intimated that a suggestion had been made that the council’s meetings be opened by prayer, and lie invited councillors to communicate their views to him privately.
