LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
WAR EFFORT DISCUSSED
New Zealand’s war effort was the sole topic of discussion in the Legislative Council, when the Address-in-Reply speeches were made after a short debate on a motion . brought forward by Hon. C. J. Carrington. The motion asked the Government to take definite steps to prevent the production and distribution of- ' disloyal and seditious propaganda.: .■ Mr Carrington- said ho supported the rights of free speech/.,buj;,-when New Zealand was faced with; dead y peril those who were fundamental y loyal should he protected from subversive influences. Action should be taken now to prevent internal dissension later. He gave credit to the Government for. the . action already taken, but urged that the leeway should be made up. The motion was, opposed by the Leader of the;* Council (Hon. D. Wilson) , who said the Government was taking all the steps necessary, and Government supporters rejected it. Debating the Address-in-Reply, Hon. V. A. Ward said there was no place for party politics to-day and country should be placed before party. The defence of'the country must-be the motto of all. Hon. T. F. Doyle urged putting everything into the war effort, and said the time had come when Russia and the United States should help the Democracies. ~ Hon. W. H. Mclntyre said there should be a Supreme War Council, , with Dominion representation. He also urged action against the Fifth Column in New Zealand. The Council sat from 2.30 to 4.45 , p.m. ■
