NOTES. Mrs S. Hogg, of Main Street, lias as iier guest, Mrs D. L. Irwin, of Wellington. Mr and Mrs F. Cameron, of Calcutta, India, are the guests of Dr. and Mrs E. B. Watson, of Main Street. Donations to the. Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund in Pahiatua now total £2972 19s 7d. At a meeting of the Loyal Mangatainoka Lodge, N.G. Bro. S. Davenport presided. Ihe following officers wore installed for the ensuing term by acting-installing Officer P.G. Sis. E. Harris; ' N.G., Sis. W. Lowe; V.G., Bro, L. Watson; E.S., Bro. M. J. Clow; 1.P.N.G., Bro. S. Davenport. Other appointments made were: Conductor, Sis. E. Harris; Guardian, Sis. D. Bick; Warden, Sis. D. Wallis. The following are the Rugby ’fixtures for Saturday:—Seniors: Konini v. Mangatainoka, at Pahiatua; Pahiatua v. Nireaha at Nireaha, llukanu. v. Woodville, at Woodville. Third grade: Eketahuna’ v. Woodville, at Eketahuna; Nireaha v. Athletic, at Nireaha; Mangatainoka v. liukanui, at Pahiatua; Pahiatua a bye. COUNTY COUNCIL. At a meeting of the Pahiatua County Council, Cr. A. W. Bissct presided, others present being: Crs. E. V. Bryant, F. T. Horne, C. H. Hodgins, J. R. Nelson, F. S. 11. Bolton, 11. R. Whitta, 4. 11. Eglinton and T. Foully. The clerk (Mr J Hutton) in his report stated that applications for voles in . respect of road works being carried out or to be carried out by the council had been lodged with the Public Works Department in respect of the following :—Stoney Crtek bridge, £lO2 (£1 for £1); Mangarama bridge. £572 (£1 for £1); Makairo and Waitakotorua Stream bridges, £2056 (£1 for £1); Corlett’s bridge, £1412 (£2 for £1); Ballance factory bridge, £2022 (£1 for £1); Breinner’s bridge, £2215 ‘(£2 for £1); Matheson’s bridge, £3949 (£2 for £1); Vowell’s Road deviation. £I2OO (£1 for ’£1); Bone’s bridge, £2630 (£1 for £1). The urgency of these works had been stressed to the department, but in view of funds from public works votes being transferred for war purposes, there was the possibility that monetary authority to proceed would not bo forthcoming in respect of all works during the current financial year A new award governing general labourers came into force on June 3 and under the wages clause the minimum rates of pay of casual labourers were increased from 2s 4d per hour to 2s 5d per hour, or-on a weekly basis from £4 8s 4d to £4 11s Bd. .Permanent workers were to be paid at a minimum rate of £4 13s 4d per week as against £4 10s per week, .vs previously. On country work, workers were to be paid 5s 2d extra per working day, or, where accommodation was provided, 2s lOd extra per working day as against the rates of 4s 6d and 2s 6d respectively under the old award. The chairman stated that the increase in wages per year would cost the council £2CO.
