FREE OVERTIME.

PLAN ABANDONED. Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, April 23. The proposed scheme by which the personnel of the Public Service should agree to work overtime without pay for a few hours a week as a contribution to the war effort has, it is understood, been abandoned. The proposal, which emanated from the Public Service Association as a gesture to help the country, was that officers of all grades in the various departments should agree to give up to eight or 10 hours a week of their leisure time to assist in preparing a national register of man-power for the war. An officer of one department said to-day that the scheme had been killed by the unfavourable attitude of the younger men in the service, particularly the temporary employees.
