NEW SCENIC AREA

HOKOWHITU DEVELOPMENT PLANS POE THE FUTURE. Another stage was reached by the City Council, at its meeting last night, in the negotiations leading towards the establishment and development of a new scenic area lor the city—the Hokowhitu Lagoon, with a motor drive from Fitzherbert Avenue, leading round the shores of the lagoon and having its exit into Albert Street. Tor some time councillors have had the ultimate development of the area in view and, last evening, a step was made toward the council taking over the land about the lagoon as part of the drive. Cr J. T. J. Heatley moved, and the council adopted the proposal, that provision be made in this year’s estimates for funds to acquire these sections and that the citv engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes) and the city curator (Mr P. Black) he asked to supply plans and a lay-out for a drive from the Eitzherbert bridge along the bank ot the Manawatu River to the full extent of the property owned by the council there, these plans to become part of the comprehensive development of the whole scheme later. Cr Heatley explained that it would be wise to have in hand plans for the development oi the area now owned by the council (which extends to the rifle range) so that, if labour were offering, this part of the work could be proceeded with.
