HITLER’S BIRTHDAY.
BERLIN, April 20. Hitler three times appeared on the balcony of tlie Chancellery to acknowledge birthday greetings from the crowds. King Victor Emannol, Signor Mussolini and Count Ciano telegraidled congratulations. Ministers gathered at tlie Willielmsplatz before midnight in order to be the first to congratulate Hitler on his 51st birthday. They cheered when the clock struck twelve. Hundreds of bouquets arc arriving at the Chancellery. Hitler announced numerous promotions, the most notable being Lieuten-ant-General Ernest Udet, the leading pilot of the Great War who has been made Air Force General. Ho visited England in 1937. Ho is reputed to have accounted for 62 Allied ’planes in the Great War. DUCE’S GREETING. HOPE FOR VICTORY. Received Anril 22.10.30 a.in. ROME. April 21. Signor Mussolini, in a birthday message to Hitler, said: j “Most sincere wishes in the name of the Fascist Government and the Italian people in the confidence that tlie German people will he equal to the great test it faces.” Berlin reports that Hitler lias awarded the Knight’s Cross Order and the Iron Cross to Vice-Admiral Schnicwind, Chief of Staff, for conduct of the sea warfare, and to Rear-Ad-miral Doenitz, Commander of U-boats.
