DESTROYER DAMAGED
RETURN TO BASE. SUBMARINES’ ACTIVITY. Received April 20. 11.10 a.m. , LONDON, April 19. It is officially stated that the British destroyer Eclipse was damaged by a “near miss” in a bomb attack and is now at her base. So far as is known there arc no survivors from His Majesty’s'dost rover Hunter, which was commanded by Lieutenant-Commander L. De Villiers. It is officially announced that the Polish submarine Orzel sank the German transport Bio de Janeiro (5300 tons') and the British submarine Sea Lion sank the August Leonhardt, another enemy transport. It is revealed that German ’planes dropped lip bombs oii British warships after the bombardment of Stavanger on Thursday. Onlv one was hit. TORPEDOED SHIP. Thirty eight officers and men of the British steamer Swainby arrived at . a northern port to day (states the British Official Wireless). The U-boat which attacked her was never seen by the men of the Swainby, which sank in eight minutes. The master of the vessel , was torpedoed a couple of months ago ; and one of her firemen was a Graf ; Spee prisoner. _ ; H.M.S. Hunter ran ashore with IT.M.S. 1 Hardy in the first British naval onslaught ; on Narvik on April 10. The destroyers were j of about 1400 tons and their complements | were 155 each. - i The Polish submarine Orzel made a dra- 1 malic voyage from Gdynia, the Polish port | in the Baltic, in October last and reached ; England after several adventures in which she wa.s nearly caught by the German ' Navy. Her instruments had been removed ; and she was in the main navigated under ! the greatest difficulties and with remark- . able skill.
