WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

OROUA FEDERATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The Oroua Federation of Women's Institutes iield its first annual meeting a.t Feiiding, yesterday, Mrs W. G. Short (Cheltenham) presiding. Executive members associated with her were Mesdames A. MeCorkindale, A. K. Drew (Sanson), It. Guthrie (ltangiwaliia), C. Stanley (Apiti), Miss Bridgman (Colyton), Mesdames C. B. Gregory (Marton Junction), W. Bakci (Makino), and H. Barnicoat (secretary and treasurer). Mrs Short, who welcomed the visitors, expressed special pleasure at the presence of an old friend, Mrs H. Barnicoat, now of Wellington, am. Miss M. Grant (Palmerston North), president of the Manawatu Federation, Mesdames T. Colljns and H. V.,'Caverhill (Rongotea), 'secretary and treasurer respectively. Shoulder sprays were presented to the Manawatu officers and to the members of the executive, these having been made by Mrs Drew. The president reported that £6 6s had been allotted by the Feiiding A. and P. Association for the institutes’ display, out of which five trophies had been provided, leaving £2 2s still to lie divided by the competitors.—The meeting decided in future not to have trophies and that all the money be divided among the institutes. A letter was read from the Mayor of Feiiding (Mr T. L. Seddon) expressing appreciation of the assistance of the institutes in connection with the Centennial hall.—Mrs Short added her appreciation of the support accorded all the celebrations. Moving the adoption of the report, already published, Mrs Short said all would agree it was a satisfactory record of achievement, in which all the members had co-operated. She spoke of the. main activities, it being revealed that 71 parcels of soldiers’ comforts had been sent forward. That was not the only way in which the members could help the war effort, the speaker said, urging every assistance in greatei production to assure adequate supplies going forward to tile Mother Country. Reference was made to the meeting of the co-ordinating 1 committee of members of the Women’s Institutes and W.D.F.U.. with the Minister of Agriculture, last year, concerning the setting un of a land army and the fact that nothing had come of that meeting Airs Short put forward the suggestion of a domestic corps to release the farmers’ wives to lend a hand, which could be a form of national service for young women. “You must be alive to the menace of margarine, rememberng that you belong to a primary producing country,” Airs Short counselled. “Don’t use it and don’t let your friends use it,” she said, and find out why butter is so much more expensive.” - Mrs W. Duncan (Apiti) offered her congratulations on the work accomplished. The motion was seconded by Airs Stanley and carried. , On behalf of the Sanson Institute, Airs Pearce presented Airs Short with a bouquet of chrysanthemums. The balance-sheet was presented by Airs Barnicoat and showed a credit of £26. . It wak reported that Sanson bad recently packed a box of clothes for Finnish children. Warm appreciation was shown of the fine work done by Airs Guthrie in taking charge of the calendars. A resolution was put forward by lire executive: “That, in view of the extraordinary circumstances existing at the present time, this biennial conference lie abandoned, the pool to he continued and the money therefrom given to thcGovernment for some patriotic purpose.”—Airs MeCorkindale supported the resolution on the ground that the institutes should consider every avenue of economy. She felt the old constitution was sound and the movement would hold together. The motion was carried unanimously. Mrs Guthrie stressed the necessity for every institute deciding to send a delegate to contribute to the pool to make this a really effective gesture. Airs Short was re-elected unopposed as,president, and, in returning thanks, said how much she had enjoyed hci term of office. The meeting approved of the number of the executive being increased to 11, the following being elec.ted : Mesdames Baker (Makino), Drew (Sanson), G. B. Gregory (Marton Junction), Guthrie (Rangiwahia), J. Mason (Alakino), A. AlcCorkindalc (redding), C. Stanley (Apiti), P. Simpson (Afakino), C.‘Smith (Rangiwahia), J. W. Sporles (Colyton). Institutes outlined their community efforts, Apiti detailing its means of securing home science for the senioi girls; Rangiwahia telling of a part\ for the pioneer women; Bulls showed that it had been the means of having an emergency ambulance box placed m a prominent place in the town foi us e in case of accident; Kinibolton told of a worth-while demonstration on lifesaving.

, Mrs Guthrie offered her congratulations to tlia co-ordinating committee on tlio compilation of the Centennial calendar. Mrs Bnrnicoat gave some details about the countrywomen's section at the Exhibition. Mrs Short reminded members of the annual festival of drama of the combined federations. Thanks were conveyed to Mrs Fitzpatrick for presiding at the piano and to all who had assisted with refreshments. Pleasure was given to the company hv Miss- Goldsmith with vocal solos, Mrs Duncan accompanying her. Miss Bridgman thanked the ’ vocalist on behalf of the members. Hospitality was extended throughout the day, morning tea being served on, arriva. and afternoon tea, Mrs Simpson (Makino) being in charge with a numbei of helpers. Mrs Stanley called for,an expression of appreciation of the work 'of the president and secretary which was accorded. At a subsequent meeting of the executive Mesdamcs McCorkindale and Gregory wore elected vice-presidents and Mrs Stanley secretary. TOKORANGI INSTITUTE. Mrs Prior presided over a meeting of the Tokorangi Women's Institute. A period of silence was observed as a mark of respect for Mr Warner, a former headmaster of the Tokorangi School. Miss Wernham gave a short talk about the Exhibition, and other members described their visits. Mrs Prior showed how to make d’oylcy cases. v G LEX OROUA INSTITUTE. On Wednesday evening- the Glen Oroua Institute and To Kuwait Piano-Accord ion Band held a successful euchre and dance in aid of institute funds and band uniforms. The euchre prizes went to Mrs Lawler and Mrs H. Hill (Taikorca) and Mr \V. Tenter, Mr R. Hill, sour., and Mr A. Hill, junr.. The Lucky Gay Gordons were won by Miss Robinson and Mr McKay; spot waltz, Miss N. Davis and Mr Carmichael. An extra was played by Mrs McKay. Mrs Skect (president) thanked all for attending, and all helpers. On behalf of the band Mr Luxford and Mr It. Hill (Taikorca) thanked the institute for their help to the band by sharing half the profits. Mr W. Boswell was M.C,
