U.S. NAVAL DEFENCE.
CONSTRUCTION EXPEDITED. •WASHINGTON, April 19._ The Senate has passed the 963,797,000 dollars Navy Appropriation Bill. This is nearly 2,000,000 dollars below the figure approved by the House. The Acting-Secretary of the Navy (Mr Compton) reported that two battleships would be completed four months ahead of schedule. Submarine construction had been hastened by two to six months, and destroyers by one to seven months. Continuing his testimony before the Senate Naval Affairs Committee, the Chief of Naval Operations (Admiral H. R. Stark) indicated that the increase of 25 per cent, in the vote for the navy, for which he had asked, would provide for three aircraft-car-riers, 1-1 cruisers, 68 destroyers, and 36 submarines, which could he built in five years at a cost of 3.486,000,000 dollars. Thus with 10 battleships already authorized the United States would have the world’s largest navy, Admiral Stark added that it was probable that 40,000 tons would be the minimum for future battleships. j
