POPPY DAY APPEAL

OUTSTANDING RESPONSE. PROBABLY A RECORD. An outstanding response was met with in the appeal conducted yesterday by tlie Palmerston North Returned Soldiers’ Association, and it is believed that the amount collected is a record, although some of the past returns are not immediately available and the previous highest amount cannot be ascertained. The amount collected is not yet complete, as one or two small returns have to come in yet, but it is estimated that with these the sum of £340 will be realised. The collection last year amounted to between £293 and £294. Officials of the association this morning expressed pleasure at the result of the appeal and at the assistance given by collectors. The city was thoroughly canvassed by collectors, more than 25 members of the association and 80 women helpers assisting. IN OTHER CENTRES. Press Association reports from Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin indicate that record collections were made, the respective totals being £2224 (with four returns to come, £2OOO against £ISOO last year/ and £1512 9s Sd, an increase of £9B 13s Gd over the 1939 figure. In Paliiatua approximately' £4O was raised and in Ekatahuna £26. At Masterton, where all supplies of poppies were sold out, £lB5 12s was realised.
