POPPY DAY.

GOOD RESPONSE TO APPEAL. The annual Poppy Day appeal made in Palmerston North to-day by the Returned Soldiers’ Association, met with a good response, and officials in charge of the collection said that early results indicated that the result would be at least as good as last year’s. Collectors were in constant touch with the central office throughout tlie day, and the estimate of the sales was formed on the continued demand for fresh supplies of poppies. Collectors covered the city thoroughly from ail early hour, and met with very lew refusals. About 25 returned soldiers conducted street sales in the business area, and more than 80 women also took part in the collection, these being wives and friends of members of the association. The women conducted a house-to-house canvass in the residential are* and also canvassed business premises.
