SEQUEL TO MURDER
INDIAN IN COURT. INSOLENT ATTITUDE. WOMAN’S COURAGE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received March 23, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, March 21. Not even bothering to remove his hat, Mahomed {Singh Azad, aged 87, described as an engineer ot North London, appeared at the Bow Street Police Court today, on remand on a charge of feloniously murdering Sir Michael O’JJwyer at Cuxton Hall, on March 18. A gaoler snatched off his hat, but defendant continued to grin, and had his hands in his pockets as the story of the murder was related. The Director of Public. Prosecutions said it was believed Azad’s real name was Udham Singh and the charge was accordingly amended. Defendant allegedly made a statement: “I don’t mind what sentence I get. I did my duty. I did not intend Ito take a person’s life—l just meant to protest. I don’t belong to any society.” Bertha Herring, a wlnte-haired, middle-aged woman, told how she tackled defendant after the shooting. “L heard a terrific explosion and caw a revolver in the hands of a. man. Ho turned and c-ame towards me. I felt deep resentment, and ran to meet him and grabbed and struggled with him. Two gentlemen then leaped oil his back,” said witness. The hearing was adjourned.
