THE MAN WHO COT THINGS DONE.—Stripped to a singlet, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, demonstrated at (he Burwood golf links, Christchurch, on Monday, that although he had not done any manual labour for years he was still capable of shifting twenty-one yards of soil in a working day of seven hours. As a sequel to this spectacular effort, the Minister dismissed fifty-seven relief workers who had been engaged on the job. Giving the reason for his demonstration, he said: “I never ask another man to do a job for me if it is sticky and I cannot do it myself.”
