TERRACE END SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE BUSINESS. At a meeting of the Terraco End School Committee on Tuesday evening, Mr W. B. Tennant presided. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Tennent, K. G. Chamberlain, H. L. Cunninghame and J. Fyfe was formed to go into the matter of insurance against liability for accidents in the baths. The grounds committee reported that repairs had been effected to fences at the back of the school. It was decided to write to the Wanganui Education' Board in connection with a large gate* at the rear of the school buildings which is in need of repair. Mr L. Garner was given power to act accordingly in connection with a proposal to graze sheep on the school grounds during the term holidays. The grounds committee was instructed to make inquiries regarding the present condition of the asphalt around school buildings. A proposal to erect barbed wire around the top of the walls of the baths was left in the hands of the baths committee., A tender was accepted for the erection of seven bathing sheds, at the baths. It was decided to grant the use of the baths to the Terrace End Scout group for a swimming carnival. Messrs E. G. Bennett and R. C. Donald were appointed to confer with the ladies’ committee in connection with the annual school picnic. It was decided to make a donation of £5 to the Mayor’s Centennial Fund for the conveyance of school children to the Exhibition. The headmaster (Mr A. W. Thompson) reported that the term ending December 15 closed with an average attendance of 558 out of an average roll of 601. Tiie present term opened with a roll of 539 96 pupils having been withdrawn and 28 pupils admitted. Seventy-seven of those withdrawn were iast year’s Form II pupils. The Hospital roll was 10.. Nurse Reid, of the dental clinic, had left on transfer to College Street. Owing to the unsettled weather conditions, swimming activities were at present suspended. A gift nf a tennis net had been received from Mr L. Gardner with thanks. _ The committee decided, in view of the present condition of the transport problem and of the difficulty in securing a suitable ground, to postpone the annual picnic this year and to concentrate on sending to the Exhibition those children who would otherwise be unable to go.
