REMARKABLE DISCOVERY.

OIL FROM KAURI PEAT. VICTORIAN CHEMIST’S CLAIM. MELBOURNE, Jan. 30. Success is claimed by a Melbourne analytical chemist, Mr S. Roose Trevor, for his experiments in producing fuel oil from New Zealand kauri peat. Mr Trevor claims that his experiments have shown that 30 gallons of crude oil can lie obtained irom a ton of kauri peat at a cost of under twopence per gallon. He says that, if tlie by-products of distillation were used, the cost of production would be below the cost of crude oil in any of tlie world’s l>ore wells. According to an analysis made by a Victorian Mines Department assayer. the sample of crude oil supplied by Mr Trevor's plant contained 13 per cent, of light oil. Mr Trevor believes the New Zealand Government will interest itself in exploiting the process.
