TE ARAKURA
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TE ARAKURA, Dec. 11. A social gathering was held in the local hall on Thursday night in honour of Miss Joyce Bennett and Mr Ronald Sullivan, ' whose wedding is to take place this week. There was a large attendance of residents, friends and relatives. Miss Bennett wore a dainty irock of cornflower blue lace. The time passed all too quickly with dances interspersed with" items. Sir L. Smith '-provided the music, while Mr D. Lower and Mr L. E. Hansen were M.C.’s. Pianoforte and mouth organ duets were rendered by Miss Audrey Firth and Mr M. Bowaler; vocal solos, Mr I. Lawton, with ilr Smith as accompanist. At a suitable juncture Mr L. E. Hansen, on behalf of residents and all present, asked Mias Bennett and Mr Sullivan to accept the large and varied array of gifts which had been brought, with the very best wishes. Miss Bennett, he said, had always been an enthusiastic worker in all the activities of the district and would be greatly missed; while Mr Sullivan, during the years of his association with the district, had been always most wiling to assist in whatever way possible. Miss Bennett and Mr Sullivan were very keen members of the Ping Pong Club. Mr Sullivan thanked Mr Hansen for his kind remarks on behalf of Miss Bennett and himself. also tor their beautiful gifts. Mr Sullivan expressed thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who were responsible for the arranging of the evening, and to the artists and piarist. Al, 11. Ilavthorne, on behalf of the members of the To Arakura Tennis Club, presented Miss Bennett and Mr Sullivan with a beautiful silver casserole. Miss Bennett had been a member of the club since its formation. Mr Sullivan had also been a keen member for several years and both would .be greatly missed. Mr Haythornu hoped they would both continue to play whenever possible. Later Mr Sullivan thanked the members of the Tennis Club for their gift and wished the club every success. Musical honours were accorded the guests. Miss Bennett was also presented with a bouquet of roses by Shirley Burnham. Dancing continued till midnight, when the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought the gathering to a close. Members of the institute are reminded of the Christmas meeting, when the competitions will be for the most attractive presentation box of flowers (fruit allowed), to bo given to the Hospital afterwards; also for the best six ginger nuts, which are also to be included in the returned soldiers’ parcel. Hostesses, Mesdames Russell, Ansin, Kendrick, Wallace and Cliectharn.
Mrs R. Holmes of Ongarue, is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. IT. Bennett. Mrs D. Lewer has returned from Napier. Mrs I>. Phillips, of Marton, has been staying in the district. Mr J. Hodge and Mr D. Lewer spent the week-end at Napier.
