RUGBY FOOTBALL
PUBLIC SERVICE TEAMS. MANAWATU BEAT WELLINGTON. Playing a good, open type of Rugby, teams drawn from public servants stationed in Wellington arid the Manawatu met at the Showgrounds on teaturday, the home side winning by 18 points to 15. The ground was hal'd and dust rose continually. The teams were: Wellington.—Dance, Cochrane, Fulton, Burns, Jones, Davidson, King, Foley, Meades, McLean, Fitzpatrick, Carrodus, Cooper, Kirschberg, Stevens. Manawatu. —Carr, Little, Stewart, Robinson, Black, Gonley, Monk, I inillay, Fitch, 11. M. McKenzie, Thurston, McCashin, Hunt, Pike and Lewin. In the first half the Manawatu team had much the better of the play in that they ran up 13 points to their opponents’ 6. The forwards in the Wellington team, however, were faster and more aggressive. It was the work of the backs which, to a large extent, brought Manawatu’s points. In the second half the Wellington team opened excellently, and some very fast, open play was seen, the visitors being in the homo team’s half for considerable periods. The final stages saw tho Manawatu team attacking hard and after the score had been at 13-HA in Wellington’s favour for some time Little crossed for a try which Stewart converted. The final whistle sounded soon afterwards. In the Wellington side Jones, Dance and. Fulton did well in tho backs with Cooper, Stevens and Kirschberg the best of the forwards. The Manawatu players who performed well were McKenzie (who played a fast game), Gonley. Monk and Stewart. Tindill was unable to accompany the Wellington team because of an injury received the previous Saturday, and Taylor, who was also to have been, on the field, contracted influenza. SCORING MOVEMENTS. Findlay scored within ten minutes of the opening, and Monk secured tho secohd try. Carr did not convert cither. Fulton then scored Wellington’s first points. Dance’s kick failcd, and Manawatu’s points total roached 10 when Carr kicked a field goal. Cochrane gained tho last try in the first half for Wellington, Dance’s kick missing, and Fitch brought Manawatu’s score to 13 with another try, Stewart missing the conversion. Fulton and Kirschberg scored early in the second spell for Wellington, Fulton converting neither try, and then Cochrane added another three points. Fulton’s kick again missed. In the last few minutes Little scored fairly close in and Stewart converted. The referee was Mr C. Eglinton. THE CURTAIN-RAISER. For the curtain-raiser the Marist primary school team, champions of the primary school competition, met a team picked from the rest. The game resulted iri no score. The result was a fair indication of the run of play.
