WAR TAXATION.

MEASURES AWAITED. WORK FOR PARLIAMENT. WELLINGTON, Sept. 25. Though there is still no sign of the Government’s war taxation proposals in legislative form, the acting-prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser) hopes to introduce them in the House of Representatives sufficiently early this week to permit Parliament to close down by tlie end of the week. While the House marked time last week with other legislation, protracted caucuses of:the Government party and meetings or Cabinet took Mace, but, though much time has bedn devoted to the question of war taxation, it is understood that finality has not yet been reached. \T 1 11 rl. Naturally there is a great deal of speculation as to the exact form the extra taxation will take. Whatever its exact nature may be, however, most persons are now Reconciled to the fact that a considerable increase in the taxation burden must be expected. The opinion in the lobbies is that there will be a substantial increase in income tax over and above the higher imposts announced in this year’s Budget and since levied by legislation, but indirect taxes may also be called on to help to finance New Zealand’s war effort. Even if the taxation proposals are introduced to-morrow, which is still doubtful, it will require hard work by legislators if the House is to finish this week. Members will probably require at least a day after the legislation is introduced to make themselves familiar with it, and as it is bound to be of a contentious nature protracted discussion appears to be inevitable. In addition the Minister of Finance (Hon. W. Nash) has announced that he intends to bring down a Bill to remove taxation anomalies, and there may also be certain aspects of this which will provide ample material for debate. Amendments to the Social Security Act and the Fair Bents Act are also scheduled for introduction. In these circumstances the prospects of the session finishing this week are not altogether bright. } ■
