Y.M.C.A. HARRIERS.

END OF SEASON. • Tho Y.M.C.A. Harrier Club concluded its 1939 season, on Saturday when a sports meeting was held at Takaro Park. Numerous members of the dub competed and many of them took part in all the events, which werevkeenly contested. Results .were : 100 yards handicap.—First heat: H. Macdonald (3) 1, S. Throwing the cricket ball. —S. McVicar 1, N. Hearsey 2, D. McCardle 3. The most- successful athlete at the meeting was S. McVicar, who was placed in five events —a good all-round performance. He and Macdonald fought out a very close finish in the sprint event. IT. Macdonald is unusually agile and fit for one who is not as youthful as he was when he defeated J. E. Lovelock in the New Zealand mile championship six or seven (/ears ago. Lndet the conditions (he was actually jumping uphill), his" lGtt.lOin. in the long jump was a good effort. He also won the shot putt and narrowly missed filling third place, in the high jump. Pleasing performances in' the middle distances were those of A. Carlisle, who intends to run on the track this summer. He should do well. He finished strongly in' the 440 yards and won with ease alter- leading for the last 200 yards. The time for the race was not- fast, but there was a strong wind in the final straight. The Manawatu 440 and 880 yards champion, C. McVicar, was not much in evidence. For the past six weeks lie has been resting a poisoned foot; but it is recovered now and hc wi'll soon be back in training to defend his titles and have an attempt at. the West Coast (Nil.) championships. N. Hearsey, who won the 880 yards on Saturday, ran a better race than was expected of him. He is at his best as a distance man. Without a pit in which to land, \ . Nix sailed over sft 3in in the high jump, and looked like adding inches if lie bad tried. Last athletic season he jumped Sit Gin more than once. He will do well this summer. Manawatu is well off. for half-milers. McVicar won the championship narrowly last February. Among the half dozen who. finished . close behind Trim were A. Cozens and D. McCardle. Judging by the way they ran on Saturday, these two young athletes should have a big say in the proceedings this season. 'Cozens and Nix had a great duel for third place in the 880. passing the tape within a foot of each other. At afternoon tea, Mr A. S. Coates, a vice-president of- the club, congratulated those who won at the meeting,, and the club on its record throughout the season. He recommended the harriers to continufe with their running during the summer months by joining an amateur athletic club.
