The Wellington Trotting Club’s spring meeting to-day was greeted with 'beautifully fine weather. After light rain the previous day the track was in good order but not fast, The favourites did not fare too well. The Wellington Stakes revealed a good colt in Gallant Chief, who won with something in reserve. The totalisator figures for the day were £28,925, as compared with £29.650 for the corresponding meeting last year, the decrease being £125. Results: NAI NAI HANDICAP, of £2CO; for trotters. One and a-half miles. 2-2 ALLWORTHY, scr (R„ Young) , 1 8-7 BIWORTHY, 12yds bbd (S. A. Eagan) 2 4- CHUDIC, 12yds bhd (C. Windsor Lass made a move from the back 'of the field rounding the bend into the straight the last time, and came through well to gain second place from Marlene. WELLINGTON STAKES, of £600; for three-year-olds. One mile and a half. 2- GALLANT CHIEF (J. Bryce, junr.) 1 1- THREE TENS (A. W. Broughton) 2 3- IMPERIAL JADE (M. (Winner trained by F. C. Dunleavey, Christchurch.) The field got away fairly well. Three Tens and Latest Edition being slowest off the mark, but they quickly went to the front and led for the first time round. Gallant Chief was being patiently driven handy to the leaders in fourth position, and down the back he made up ground. He challenged the leaders in the straight, and hard driven he won well. Three Tens beat Latest Edition well for second place, with Imperial Jade well up fourth after having every chance. Gallant Chief proved himself to be a class colt who should go on with STEWARDS’ HANDICAP, of £225; for trotters. Two miles. 4- VIOLET WRACK, 12yds bhd (A. After leading for three-quarters of the journey, Rollalong gave way lo Blaydon, Josedale Grattan and Huguenot. As the straight was reached, Blaydon went on to beat Josedale Grattan comfortably, and Huguenot beat Becky Direct, both tiring, for third by half a head. WELLINGTON HANDICAP, of £275.
