LEAGUE OF MOTHERS.

FIRST YEAR AT TERRACE END. The Terrace End branch of the League of Mothers has been in existence j"Jst over a year, and members held their first annual meeting in the Coronation Hall, yesterday afternoon, Mrs H. E. Townshend (acting-presi-dent) being in the chair. Greenery, berries and spring llowers, bad been arranged in the hall by Mesdames Hansen and Brookfield, i’here was a short admission service, the new members being Mesdames J. Eaddy, C. Lloyd, Gillies, McDonell and Shouler. Mesdames A. Tregurtha, Johansen, and Lucas on transfer from the Palmerston North branch, were accorded a welcome. * *

Tiie report presented by Mrs Townshend, stated, inter alia: It is pleasing to report that to-day our membership stands at 111, an increase of (jb in our first year. Uur esteemed secretary, Mrs J. S. Hornblow, lcviid it necessary to resign owing to lllhealth and the good wishes of our league go out to her. The vacancy lias been filled by Mrs J. Mewett. In March a choir was formed under the leadership of Mrs H. Prince. It has been a great assist:Ace in making our meetings enjoyable and is very much appreciated. At the same time a drama circle was formed, the convener being Mrs R. Holmes. Several performances have been given and have been greatly enjoyed. In March, 1939, Mrs Dymock, our president, was granted leave of absence to visit England, and Mrs Townshend, one of the vice-president's, was elected to fill the vacancy during her absence. To all speakers and artists who have assisted us during the year we' tender our thanks. To the Press for its splendid reports of our metings our thanks are also due. To all members and especially the committee who have worked so hard and given of their times so freely, I wish to record my thanks and hope that the coming year will show a still further increase

iii membership, and with it a bright and enjoyable time for all. The financiaL statement presented by Mrs Mewett disclosed a satisfactory position and with the report was adopted without discussion. Officers were elected for the ensuing year as follow: —President, Mrs E. Jtymock; vice-presidents, Mesdames Townsliend and E. Thwaites; committee, Mesdames J. Body, J. L. Davies, Hansen, Harris, J. Mewett, W. Rogers, Mayo, J. Puklowski, Silson, R. Holmes, Brookfield, E. B. Jennings, E. Lucas, C. Speight; secretary, Mrs Speight; treasurer, Mrs Mewett. Mesdiunes Brookfield, Lucas and Hansen were appointed to take charge of decorations. The happy thought for the day was given by Mrs Garrick. A letter was read from the town clerk soliciting the appointment of a representative to the committee for the adoption of Chinese refugee children. Entertainment was provided in a novel manner by the members at an “At Home” organised by Mrs R. Holmes, Mrs Townshend being the hostess. The first guests to arrive were the members of the league choir led by Mrs H. Cox, Mrs Anderson presiding at the piano, and the soloist being” Mrs Brookfield. Mrs Holmes next arrived to introduce Mrs Eaddy as a new member asking the hostess to tell her something of the aims and objects of the league. "With the arrival of further guests the party resolved itself into a musical afternoon, Margaret Alderso.i in c'ostume contributing vocal items, Mesdames Cox, Brookfield, Mavo and Eaddy, vocal quartettes; Mrs Holmes, musical monologues and recitations Thanks were conveyed to the performers and hostesses by Mrs Body.

Mrs Brookfield proposed a vote of thanks to the officers and committee for the manner in which the league meetings had been conducted during the year. Mrs E. Thwaites welcomed members at the door, and the tea hostesses were Mesdames W. - Rogers and R. Mayo (conveners), Burrell, J. Body. Cox. Eahrian," Garrick, Hansen, Harris and Holmes.
